HIV/AIDS Education The American Red Cross is a national leader in AIDS education. The Red Cross provides unbiased, timely and accurate information about AIDS and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. To help prevent the spread of this deadly disease, the local Red Cross HIV/AIDS program has trained instructors to provide education to youth, families, and to people in the workplace. History Behind the Program... The American Red Cross first accepted the challenge to educate the public about HIV and AIDS in 1985. Working in Partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Red Cross released the orignal HIV/AIDS Instructor's Course in 1990, providing the public with a facts-based foundation about HIV and AIDS. Since then, it has become increasingly clear that prevention education must go beyond providing only facts. Behavioral and social science research indicates that effective prevention education includes multiple sessions, emphasizes skills development, and encourages interactive participation for all people, especially youth. The Basic HIV/AIDS Program is the enhanced successor to the current HIV/AIDS Instructor Course. The new program consists of two courses: Fundamentals and Prevention Skills. It employs the same concepts of factual accuracy, nonjudgemental perspective, and cultural sensitivity as did the earlier HIV/AIDS Instructor Course. The modular design provides multiple methods to encourage awareness, knowledge, and personalization of the facts about HIV and AIDS, as well as skills development.
